Since i switched to Mac i´ve been amazed how clean and powerful OS X is and how easy it is to someone with very little programming knowledge, pretty much like myself, to be able to customize and create powerful little applications and tweaks to make the OS work the way you would like it to work.

In this post i´m going to talk about “Services” and how i easily created one service that simplified my work flow regarding emailing pdf files. I work a lot with pdf files and i often have to email those pdf files to friends and colleagues. By creating a convenient and contextual service i can with a couple of clicks auto create an email with the pdf enclosed as an attachment.

Services are not new (they are to me!) in Snow Leopard but they have been completely reinvented. You can find out and learn more about services at http://www.macosxautomation.com/ They have tutorials and resources that will help you to get to grips with this powerful automation tool.

Here´s the how to:

Go to the applications folder and launch Automator (screenshot)
Then click the Service icon to create a new service from a template (screenshot)
In the “Services receives selected” box choose “PDF files” (screenshot)
Then look in the Actions Library select “Mail”, then select and drag to the right pane “New Mail Message” (screenshot)
Finally go to the file menu and select Save As “Email Pdf” to save your new service.
You are done and good to go.

Now in any finder window you can select a pdf file and in the services menu there will be an associated service to create a new email with the selected pdf file as an attachment (screenshot).

Easy peasy. Go ahead, create your own services to make your work flow simpler and don´t forget to share them with me. Have fun!

Hoje - 7 de Outubro de 2009 - foi anunciado pela Amazon.com que pela primeira vez o leitor de livros em formato electrónico Kindle 2 vai estar disponível para venda a clientes de todo o mundo. Portugal é um dos mais de 100 países em que poderá ser adquirido este gadget cultural, quanto ao preço o José Furtado já fez as contas e custará cerca de €240,00, os livros poderão ser comprados na loja Kindle da Amazon e os mesmos custam à volta de $10 US.

A loja Kindle tem mais de 350 mil títulos disponíveis para venda, o processo de compra é muito simples e o livro aparece no Kindle como por acto de magia, sem necessidade de recorrer a cabos e fazer sincronizações com o computador, na verdade os livros são transferidos via rede sem fios (3G).

Mas aquilo que mais me apela no Kindle não é o facto de ter uma loja onde possa comprar livros e gastar o meu dinheirinho (é certo que irei comprar títulos mais recentes e até mesmo subscrever jornais ou revistas). Não. O que me entusiasma no Kindle é a perspectiva de poder aceder a sítios como:

onde tenho à minha disposição milhares de livros a um preço imbatível: grátis.

Nesses sítios posso, por exemplo, encontrar o livro de Franz Kafka, A metamorfose escolher o formato kindle, fazer o download e instalar no Kindle. Tão simples como isto. Um Kindle tem capacidade para armazenar cerca de 1500 livros, é como ter uma pequena biblioteca na palma da mão (sem que para tanto tenha sido abatida uma única árvore, o que é um aspecto também muito interessante e de valor).

I really think it’s going to be difficult to appreciate tomatoes in other seasons than summer. Tomatoes are really meant to be eaten now, even if this year has been somewhat a hard one for them.
